Personal Motivation

"Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from the anxieties of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise like a trap."

-Luke 21:34

As this bible verse suggests, it is very easy to become overwhelmed by our day-to-day activities. Every once in a while we need to refresh our minds, focus our thoughts and set the course for a successful future. We all need a little motivation to get us going, for as Matthew Kelly says,

"You will always be as confident and healthy as the stories you read, listen to, and tell yourself."

It's funny how our success feeds off of other people's success. We've all heard the story of Abraham Lincoln's persistent journey to become president of the United States, but yet, each time I hear it, I am just as inspired. Why? Because it gives us hope. Norman Vincent Peale once said:

"People become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things. When they believe in themselves they have the first secret of success."

I've searched the internet for quality websites with the words of inspiration that instill this hope and purpose in us. By far the best website I have found is Josh Hinds' Motivation Point, a website filled with motivational articles and success stories, all of which are FREE to read. I have enjoyed Josh's stories so much that I even subscribed to his Let's Talk Motivation! Newsletter, where the best and brightest from the motivational industry share tips on living a more enriched life.

Another unbelievable motivational source that I refer to quiteoften is Ralph Marston's The Daily Motivator. If you're looking for a little morsel of inspiration each day, visit greatday.com to become inspired. Also, check out Ralph's great motivational picture presentations, such as The Goodness of Life.

Probably my source for motivation that hits all aspects- personal, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual- is Matthew Kelly. I had the pleasure of personally meeting Matthew Kelly when he came to speak at my high school in 2000. At the time I had never heard of him. He spoke to us about the message in his book, The Rhythm of Life: Living Every Day with Passion and Purpose, a counter-cultural masterpiece addressing the issue of living a happy and healthy life- physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually- in an age when values are put on the back burner for materialism and self-interest. At the end of his speech, each student at my school was given a copy of this wonderful book. Little did I know what an impact one man's words would have on my life. I read The Rhythm of Life every summer to refresh my mind. I've never come across someone who has hit so close to home with his writing. A common theme I find in this book can be explained by a quote from Matthew:

"What happens in our lives is almost always a result of those things
that we habitually think and those things that we habitually do."

The Rhythm of Life teaches you just what the title implies- how to find your rhythm in this fast-paced world. Simply put, this book is about slowing down, appreciating life, and becoming the people we know we can be.

Another great mentor is Brian Tracy. Every day I wake up and check my email to read Brian Tracy's Quote of the Day. Brian Tracy has developed a plethora of motivational books, tapes, and more.
